5 Common Mistakes Beginners Make with Air Dry Pottery
1. Not Kneading the Clay Properly
A simple set of quality watercolour paints is all you need to bring your ideas to life. Look for a set with a good range of colours so you can experiment with blending, layering, and creating a variety of effects. Many sets include the essentials like primary colours and a few bonus shades, making them a perfect starting point.
2. Using Too Much Water
Unlike traditional clay, air dry clay doesn’t respond well to excessive moisture. Adding too much water can weaken the structure, causing cracks as it dries. Instead, use a damp sponge or your fingers to smooth surfaces lightly.
3. Drying Too Quickly
Placing your piece in direct sunlight or near a heater might seem like a good way to speed up the process, but it often leads to warping or cracks. Let it dry slowly in a cool, shaded space.
4. Skipping Surface Prep Before Painting
Air dry clay can be slightly porous, so without a primer or sealant, paint might absorb unevenly. Lightly sand rough areas and apply a primer or a thin layer of white acrylic before adding colour.
5. Forgetting to Seal the Finished Piece
Air dry pottery is not waterproof, and skipping a sealant can leave it vulnerable to damage. Use a clear varnish, Mod Podge, or an acrylic sealer to protect and preserve your creation.
